Levels

The Levels field is used in conjunction with the Expand field. This field defines how many branches deep to expand the Summary Item for the row.

Selecting either “Above” or “Below” in the Expand field will set the Level field value to 0 by default. You can then specify the specific corresponding numeric value (i.e. 1,2, etc.) for the level of the tree you wish to expand.

A value of 0 will always return the bottom of the tree (i.e. the furthest branch deep in the tree) no matter how many levels there are.

You can set the numeric value in the Levels field to expand to the specific branch level of the subordinate items. For example:

Summary Level

           Subordinate item (Level = 1)

                   Subordinate item (Level = 2)

This could correspond to the following:

Department

Sales

Marketing

Advertising

Level = 1

Online Advertising

Print Advertising

Television Advertising

Level = 2

If Expand is set on the Department row, a Level setting of “1” would expand to show the items that comprise the first branch of the subordinate branch elements:

Department

YTD Total

Sales

$5000

Marketing

$450

Advertising

$300

If Expand is set on the Department row, a Level setting of “2” would expand to show the items that comprise the first and second branches of the subordinate branch elements:

Department

YTD Total

Sales

$5000

Marketing

$450

Advertising

$300

     Online Advertising

$150

     Print Advertising

$50

     Television Advertising

$100

If Expand is set on the Department row, a Level setting of “0” would expand to show the items that comprise all subordinate branches (to the bottom of the tree). In this instance it would show the first and second branches of the subordinate branch elements:

Department

YTD Total

Sales

$5000

Marketing

$450

Advertising

$300

     Online Advertising

$150

     Print Advertising

$50

     Television Advertising

$100

Note: If the Expand field is not set to either “Above” or “Below”, any value set in the Levels field will be ignored. Also, if the Line Expansion Fields checkbox is not checked on the context ribbon, this field will not appear in the Line Definition workspace.
